Planning for your self-catering holiday
If you’ve booked a self-catering holiday this summer, you don’t need us to tell you about the myriad benefits of these vacations – from the greater freedom, privacy and flexibility to, often, more spacious accommodation and better value for money. Trips like this are frequently more pet and family-friendly, too.
And, when it comes to food, you’re spoilt for choice. Rather than having to eat whatever’s on the menu at the hotel buffet or restaurant, you have total freedom to enjoy whatever meals you want. This makes self-catering ideal, for example, for anyone with an allergy or other dietary restriction. And not only does self-catering give you more choice, it’s also a great way to save money on your break. What’s more, you get the best of all worlds since you can, of course, still eat out or grab a takeaway as you wish.
It’s a good idea to set off stocked up with staples for the week or two you’ll be away, including all your favourite snacks, so that you have a good base to work from; then you can top up as necessary during the holiday. So it’s worth putting a bit of planning into this and thinking about what you need before you leave.
Ganesha is a family-run wholefoods specialist which has been in business for 45 years – with a user-friendly online shop plus three shops in East Devon.
Do a shop with us before your holiday and stock up on the following goodies and more, many from leading brands:
- Breakfast foods
You’ll probably have breakfast at your accommodation. We can help with things like jumbo oats, oatbran, dried fruit, muesli, bran sticks, peanut butter and honey so you can relax and enjoy your morning refreshment in a new environment without having to worry about getting to school, work or college. Get each holiday day off to a cracking start with the most important meal of the day.
- Snacks
Take your own snacks with you for the journey, days out, packed lunches and general consumption and make considerable savings. We’ve got you covered with healthy treats like almonds, currants, figs, Brazil nuts, mixed nuts, walnut pieces, cashew nuts, dates, almonds, apricots and more.
- Staples for dinner
It’s always worth packing some basics for the nights you’re cooking for yourself. You can always supplement with fresh fruit and vegetables. We’ve got red lentils, rice and organic roasted buckwheat kasha; ideal if you can’t digest wheat grains or to replace rice to make a delicious risotto. Alternatively, our soupmix blend of peas, lentils and pearl barley can go in stews, soups, casseroles, chillis and other dishes. Our blend of dried beans, beanmix, can be used in the same way.
- Drinks
Don’t leave home without enough drinks, including tea and coffee and anything else you’d have at home, such as your favourite herbal infusion, plus plenty of juice and squash. Make up bottles or flasks for days out and save on buying these when you’re out and about.
- Everything else you need
You can’t bet on having all the herbs and spices you want at your accommodation, so take these with you. It may also be worth packing a few basic cleaning items so you can give the accommodation a good once-over before you leave, and to keep on top of laundry and washing up during your stay.
Finally, you’ll want to take essential toiletries like soap, body wash, shampoo and so on, not to mention sun lotion for days on the beach or by the pool.
So make us your first (and only) port of call for organic, vegan wholefood essentials for your holiday which don’t compromise on ethics, taste, quality or effectiveness.
